Dr Suzy Ort

Principal Dr. Suzy Ort began her career as a Social Studies teacher at University Heights High School, a transfer high school in the Bronx and then as an English as a Second Language teacher in the Czech Republic, the country from which her parents immigrated in the 60’s. 

 

Dr Ort holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Master’s degree in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.  As an undergraduate at Brown University she wrote her thesis on how history textbooks build a sense of national identify and earned a dual bachelor’s degree in Education Studies and History.

 

Dr. Ort has worked as a research associate at the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools, and Teaching (NCREST) at Teachers College on several research and development projects, including revamping the state Regents examinations system.  She was an instructional coach placed at Park East High School as part of a school turnaround effort lead by the Institute for Student Achievement (ISA) from 2002-2007.  In 2007 Dr. Ort became an Assistant Principal at Park East High School where she focused on developing quality instruction school wide, Instructional Support Services, serving Multi-language Learners, access to and success in Advanced Placement classes, and writing grants that have funded projects such as a building a science lab, renovating the library, creating a weight room and the fixing our famous “gymatorium.”  Dr Ort was also a co-founder of and the Athletic Director for the East Harlem Pride, a consortium of five small East Harlem high schools that partner together to provide students in small schools access to sixteen PSAL sports teams. At present, she is in her 5th year as the devoted and extremely proud principal of Park East, where she looks forward to going to work every single day with an amazing staff, highly supportive family community, and the best students in NYC.
