Electronics Policy 2025-2026

Park East High School is a 1-to-1 Chromebook school. All students receive a Chromebook and a graphing calculator in 9th grade, which they keep until they graduate. Students are expected to have their Chromebooks or personal laptops fully charged in school daily. Students are also expected to carry their laptop chargers to school daily. Students who fail to do this three times will receive a disciplinary referral for lunch detention.

In compliance with the statewide, bell-to-bell restriction on cell phones and per Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, Park East is a phone-free school, utilizing Yondr pouches. Students will NOT have access to their phones in school from morning entry until dismissal at 3:10.

The policy is:

All cellphones, headphones, and smartwatches are prohibited throughout the entire building during school hours, unless expressly permitted by a staff member for educational purposes. Students may use their cell phones during their lunch period if they exit the building for lunch. Students who use personal laptops and tablets will be permitted to use them for educational purposes only. If caught texting, or using FaceTime or any other communication services, the student will lose the privilege of using their personal devices, and a school Chromebook will be issued to them.

DAILY PROCEDURE

As students arrive at school, they will:

  1. Turn their phone off or place it in airplane mode.
  2. Place their phone inside their pouch and secure it in the presence of school staff.
  3. Store their pouch in their backpack or locker for the day.
  • This process will be repeated at lunch time, for students who leave the building for lunch: their phones will be unpouched at departure and repouched upon re-entry. Phones are not allowed in school during lunch.
  • At the end of the day, students will unlock their pouch, remove their phone, and store their pouch in their backpack. Students must bring their pouch to school with them each day.
  • All phones will be unpouched for after-school activities, including school clubs, team sports, and independent library use.
  • It is recommended that students arrive early to school so that phone procedures do not cause lateness to class.
  • Students who arrive late or leave early will pouch/unpouch their phones in the Main Office

Improper Phone Use During School

If a student is seen using their phone during the school day, the teacher will write a referral, and Administration will collect the student’s pouch/phone for central storage. The phone will be returned at the end of the day, approximately 30 minutes after dismissal. The student will also receive lunch detention the same day or the next, and a call home will be made.

Consequences for repeated violation of this mandatory policy will include extended lunch or after-school detention, daily confiscation of phone (returned at the end of the day), daily confiscation of phone (parent or guardian required to pick up), exclusion from school trips/events, or in-school suspension (B21 for insubordination).

Forgotten Pouches

If a student forgets their pouch, the phone will be labeled and placed in central storage and returned approximately 30 minutes after dismissal. Administration will also call home to remind the parent/guardian of the policy.

If a student consistently forgets their pouch, it is considered lost. Refer to the Lost Pouch policy below.

Pouch Damage / Lost Pouch

Repercussions for damaged or lost pouches will include:

  • Detention, daily confiscation of phone (returned at the end of the day),  parent or guardian required to pick up the phone, or In-School Suspension
  • $20 fee for a replacement pouch

But I don’t have a phone….

If a student reports not having a phone, the school will verify with a parent/guardian, and the student will sign an attestation.  The student will be added to a verified “no phone” list. If the student is seen using a phone during the school day, in or outside of school, the disciplinary processes elaborated above will be engaged.

Medical exceptions

Students with documented medical needs that require monitoring on a phone will be issued a special medical pouch and instructed in its use. Phones should only be used for these medical purposes.

Chromebook Policy

  • Students must bring their Chromebooks or personal laptops to school every day, fully charged.
  • Personal laptops and tablets are permitted for educational purposes only.
  • If a student does not have a Chromebook, they may go to the main office to borrow one for the school day.
    • Students must give their school ID to Kelvin or the main office staff.
    • Students will receive a loaner Chromebook that they must return at the end of the day.
  • The main office will keep track of the students.
  • Students will receive lunch detention after coming to school without their Chromebook three times.
